For homeowner, one of the biggest prides and joys is their garden, however, there are times where a luscious garden with flowers and bushes is simply not a option, either due to soil or water conditions.
One way of still getting the desired results is creating a raised flower bed with a mixture of soil suitable for your garden.
What you need to make a raise flower bed
This is a very suitable approach to gardening even if your garden has suitable soil, but you have a lot moles in the soil, which are eating away at the roots of your precious petunias.
What you will need for this project is some lumber or plywood materials, screws and some poly-paper to put as a base of the flower beds.
The construction process
The constriction process is quite simple, all you will need is the appropriate size of material, the most commonly used material is plywood as it is very durable an inexpensive.
You would have to treat the plywood with turpentine or paint at the points where it will meet with the soil and the ground underneath โ this is to prevent it from rotting.
Once prepared, you would need to join your plywood sheets together in order to achieve the shape you have drawn out for yourself, a good beginner size is 1 meter by 2 meters with the width of the boards being the depth of your flower beds. Since flower roots do not grow that deep, a board with the width of 40-50cm would be more than enough.
Join the butt ends of the boards together using a square then drive the screws into the boards to join them, to strengthen that bond use some glue on the joint before screwing it together.
You can use some clamps to hold it together while it dries, then drive the screws in โ pre drill the holes to avoid splitting the wood.
Filling in the flower beds
After the frames are done, lay down a foundation of poly-paper which is rot resistant and will be a barrier between the native soil and the special mixture you will be putting in.
Place the frame on top of the poly-paper, and start filling in with the soil mixture you have prepared โ its qualities will depend on the flowers you will be putting in.
After that you will have a nice, blank canvas on which you can create the perfect, little garden without worrying about moles or lack of water.
