May be you have been in a rush to organize the entire family to move and you have forgotten your pet. However, allowing your pet to adjust is also very important. Your new home should be safe and pet proofed, so how can you do that?
The Household Dangers
When brought to a new home pets explore every inch. That is why you should make sure that your home is absolutely protected and free from any household dangers. The best way to do so is to try and look at the house from the perspective and eyes of a toddler. In other words, you should move around the house at the level of a pet and find out which are the health hazards.
Which are the things that your pet can get hurt on. May be these are electrical sockets, or some wires? Or maybe these are some cleaning materials on the lower shelf that could be poisonous for the pet. You should consider the licking deterrents, the door frames, the floor moldings, the deodorants that can be chewed on.
Property Pet Proofing
Once you have made the inspection indoors, check what is happening in the yard. In case you do have a fence in the yard, check it for holes and other spots that need to be patched. You should also check if the exit gates and properly latched and if they can be locked correctly.
In case you do have plants that you know are poisonous to the animals, remove them. If you are not sure, take a picture and show it to a florist. You can also consult the experts on pests, ticks and fleas. Further dangerous for your pets are the open roads, so if you do not have a fence, better do not leave them to run free outside.
Help Your Pet During the Transition Period
Moving to a new home can be traumatic for the pet, so if you do not want the pet to take it out on the door frames and the furniture, make an effort to help the poor creature. May be at first the pet will be happy with the transition, but then once you leave it alone the suffering will start. So, give your dog a new toy to chew, try to leave the pet alone for several minutes but do that regularly until the pet starts feeling comfortable again. It will be very useful and smart to proceed with the normal routine of the pet. And finally, be patient with the pet and your efforts will be rewarded.
